Hawaiian Volcanoes & Valleys – Antique Voyage Engravings, Renzi, Paris 1836
A rare and visually striking set of three small original antique engravings depicting the dramatic volcanic landscapes and tropical valleys of the Hawaiian Islands (Îles Hawaï), published in Paris in 1836. These views originate from the celebrated French voyage literature of the early nineteenth century and were engraved after drawings made during scientific and exploratory expeditions to the Pacific.
The three scenes portray different aspects of Hawaii's remarkable natural environment:
Volcan de Kai-roua – an evocative depiction of an active Hawaiian volcano, with smoking vents and fiery geological formations illustrating the volcanic forces that shaped the islands.
Vallée Vaipou – a picturesque valley enclosed by steep mountains and lush tropical vegetation, capturing the fertile landscapes that impressed early European visitors.
Chute du Voonai-Rokoa – a scenic waterfall cascading through a rugged volcanic landscape, reflecting the dramatic topography and abundant water sources of the Hawaiian archipelago.
These engravings were published during a period when Hawaii remained one of the most fascinating and remote destinations in the Pacific. French explorers, scientists, and artists documented the islands' landscapes, people, and customs, bringing knowledge of Polynesia to European audiences. Framing tips:
