Hawaiian Islands – Three Pacific Exploration Engravings, Paris 1836
This rare matching set of three engravings depicting scenes from the Hawaiian Islands (Îles Hawaï) was published in Paris in 1836 and reflects the European fascination with Polynesia during the great age of Pacific exploration. The plates combine ethnographic observation, historical events, and early depictions of Hawaiian society, offering a remarkable visual record of the islands during a period of profound cultural change.
The first engraving, Baptême du ministre du Roi à bord de la Corvette française l’Uranie, illustrates the baptism of a Hawaiian royal minister aboard the French corvette L’Uranie. The scene documents the growing interaction between Hawaiian leaders and European explorers, missionaries, and naval expeditions during the early nineteenth century.
The second plate, Établissement des Missionnaires, depicts a missionary settlement surrounded by tropical vegetation. The image records the arrival and establishment of Christian missionary communities that would play a significant role in the social and political transformation of the Hawaiian Kingdom.
The third engraving, Offrande faite à Cook, portrays a ceremonial offering presented to Captain James Cook. As the first European known to have reached the Hawaiian Islands in 1778, Cook's arrival marked a pivotal moment in Hawaiian history. The scene reflects European interpretations of encounters between Hawaiian society and visiting explorers.
Together, these engravings provide a fascinating narrative of cultural exchange, exploration, religion, and diplomacy in the Pacific.
