Description
This finely hand-colored copperplate engraving vividly depicts two iconic Alpine passes in Switzerland—the Great St. Bernard Pass and the St. Gotthard Pass. The top illustration showcases the Great St. Bernard Pass, capturing the arduous journey of travelers navigating the rugged, snow-covered terrain. Famous for its historical significance and the hospices established by monks to aid weary travelers, this pass has long been a vital route through the Alps.
The lower scene portrays the St. Gotthard Pass, one of the most crucial Alpine crossings. It features a dynamic view of a rushing stream cutting through the dramatic mountainous landscape, with caravans and pack animals making their way along the narrow, winding path. The engraving provides a glimpse into the challenges of Alpine travel during the early 19th century.
Part of Friedrich Johann Bertuch’s renowned *Bilderbuch für Kinder* (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1805, this plate exemplifies Bertuch's commitment to blending education and art. His 12-volume encyclopedia, famous for its 1,200 engraved plates, offered young readers a fascinating view of natural history, geography, and culture.
