About this sheet
This rare and highly decorative original equestrian engraving originates from Des Welt-berühmten Hertzog Wilhelms von Newcastle Neu-eröffnete Reit-Bahn, published in Nuremberg around 1700. The work is based on the celebrated horsemanship teachings of William Cavendish, Duke of Newcastle, one of the most influential riding masters in European history and a pioneering figure in the development of classical dressage.
The engraving depicts a highly trained horse performing an advanced elevated movement resembling the levade or pesade, guided by riders and assistants in the formal environment of a Baroque riding school. The composition beautifully captures the elegance, discipline, and technical sophistication associated with aristocratic horsemanship during the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. The controlled posture of the horse, combined with the poised figures dressed in richly colored court attire, reflects the theatrical grandeur of European equestrian academies.
Rendered with fine original hand-coloring, the engraving possesses exceptional decorative appeal. The warm tones of the horse and costumes contrast elegantly against the restrained background, emphasizing both the movement of the animal and the ceremonial atmosphere of elite dressage training. Newcastle’s riding manuals became enormously influential throughout Europe and were prized among noble courts, military riding schools, and collectors fascinated by advanced riding techniques and equestrian spectacle.
Today the engraving displays beautifully as both an important equestrian document and an elegant decorative artwork. Its refined composition and authentic period coloring make it particularly suitable for libraries, studies, country houses, riding schools, and interiors devoted to sporting art or equestrian history. The print pairs exceptionally well with dark walnut, ebonized, or lightly gilt frames combined with warm ivory or parchment-toned mats.
This is an original engraving printed around 1700, not a modern reproduction. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The engraving is sold unframed; any framed images shown are for presentation and interior inspiration only and may not always be to scale.
Condition: Fair to good overall condition with age-related toning, scattered foxing and staining and wear to the sheet edges consistent with age.
Framing tips: Displays exceptionally well in dark walnut, museum black, or lightly gilt frames with a generous ivory mat, complementing the warm hand-coloring and refined Baroque equestrian character of the engraving.
