About this sheet

Renaissance Wind Cosmology Woodcut with Globe & Elemental Winds, 1590

This striking late 16th-century German woodcut page originates from an early encyclopedic or natural-philosophical publication titled Teutsche Speiskammer (“German Pantry”), a richly illustrated work exploring the natural world, the four elements, food, animals, and the forces governing human life and nature. The sheet is headed Von dem Lufft vnd Winden (“On Air and Winds”) and centers around a remarkable allegorical diagram of the winds surrounding a terrestrial globe.

The elaborate woodcut illustrates personified wind deities radiating around the earth within a circular cosmological framework naming the directional winds in German. Around the central globe appear expressive human faces exhaling powerful gusts of wind, reflecting Renaissance understandings of meteorology and the elemental structure of the universe. The imagery combines scientific curiosity, medieval cosmology, and artistic imagination in a highly decorative composition typical of German Renaissance printing.

The typography is executed in bold blackletter, accompanied by an ornate historiated initial and dense columns of early German text discussing the nature of air and movement. Such pages were intended not only as educational material but also as visual demonstrations of divine order and the relationship between nature, science, and everyday life.

The visual power of the central wind diagram makes this sheet particularly desirable today among collectors of early science, cosmography, alchemy, meteorology, and Renaissance woodcut illustration. The dramatic composition and strong graphic quality also lend themselves exceptionally well to framing, especially in scholarly interiors, libraries, or cabinets of curiosities-inspired settings.

This page appears consistent with a genuine late 16th-century impression, likely produced circa 1590 in a German-speaking printing center such as Strasbourg or Frankfurt, both major hubs of illustrated Renaissance publishing.

Special note: This is an original antique woodcut leaf, not a reproduction. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The print is sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and interior inspiration only and may not always be to scale with the original.

Condition report: Overall in good antique condition for its age with expected age-related toning, staining, edge wear, and minor losses to the margins. Some creasing and handling wear visible, consistent with use in a 16th-century printed folio volume. The woodcut impression remains dark, sharp, and visually strong. Please study the image carefully.

Framing tips: This woodcut displays beautifully in dark walnut, ebonized, or museum-style black frames paired with warm ivory mats. The dramatic circular wind diagram benefits particularly from generous matting and subtle directional lighting, making it ideal for libraries, studies, or interiors inspired by Renaissance science and curiosity collections.
