The scene captures everyday life in New York around 1850, with figures walking along the pavement and gathered near the iron railings of the churchyard. These staffage figures provide scale and narrative, while the engraving itself demonstrates the clarity and precision characteristic of Meyer’s publications, which were often based on first-hand observation.
St. Paul’s Chapel, completed in 1766, is the oldest surviving church building in Manhattan and held great historical importance, including its association with George Washington following his inauguration. By the mid-19th century, it stood as a symbol of continuity in an increasingly modernizing city, making it a popular subject for illustrated travel and topographical works.
The lower margin carries the original publication credits, including “Aus d. Kunstanst. d. Bibliogr.
