Romantic Antique View of Bethlehem Holy Land under a Pink Sunset, ca. 1850
A beautifully hand-colored 19th-century lithographic view of Bethlehem, depicting the historic biblical city in the Holy Land under a luminous pink evening sky. This atmospheric panoramic composition was likely produced around 1850 in the style of Friedrich Perlberg or related German lithographic publishers specializing in romanticized topographical views of the Near East.
The print presents Bethlehem as a fortified hill town rising above a gently rolling landscape populated with palms, pathways, and small groups of travelers. Figures on horseback and pedestrians animate the foreground, guiding the viewer’s eye toward the ancient city walls and clustered architecture beyond. The soft pastel sky, combined with delicate hand coloring and warm earth tones, creates a distinctly romantic Orientalist atmosphere characteristic of mid-19th-century European views of Palestine.
Particularly appealing is the decorative lithographic border surrounding the image, adding refinement and architectural balance to the composition.
