Created around 1735 for a large illustrated family Bible, this copperplate engraving portrays Matthias standing on a stone pedestal, symbolising his elevation to apostolic authority.
Matthias is depicted as an aged yet strong figure, with a flowing beard and robes, holding a large spear in his right hand, traditionally representing his martyrdom, and an open book in his left, symbolising the Gospel and his teachings. A radiant halo of divine light shines above his head, marking his sanctity and chosen status. In the background, scenes of ancient buildings, temples, and small figures engaged in daily activities create a landscape setting that situates him within the early Christian world.
