Antique engraving, Tomb of King Henry V Westminster Abbey, Vertue
This refined eighteenth-century copperplate engraving depicts the tomb of King Henry V as seen in Westminster Abbey, London. Executed by the esteemed British engraver and antiquarian George Vertue (1684–1756), the print originates from the important historical publication *The History of England* by Paul de Rapin de Thoyras, issued in London between circa 1732 and 1736. Vertue’s work is highly regarded for its precision, documentary value, and elegant baroque presentation, making this engraving both a historical record and a decorative artwork of lasting appeal.
The composition centers on the elaborate funerary monument of Henry V, one of England’s most celebrated medieval monarchs, famed for his victory at Agincourt in 1415. The tomb is shown in remarkable detail, including the Gothic architectural structure supporting the effigy. Notably, the engraving records the effigy in its damaged state during the eighteenth century, with the head missing—an important historical detail, as the original silver head and decorative elements had been removed in the mid-sixteenth century.
Surrounding the monument is a richly ornamented frame filled with heraldic and military symbolism. At the top, a royal coat of arms is flanked by martial trophies such as trumpets, banners, and weapons, emphasizing Henry V’s identity as a warrior king. The lower section features a decorative cartouche with Latin inscription and an arrangement of arms and armor, executed in Vertue’s characteristic linear precision and balanced composition.
This engraving is an excellent example of early eighteenth-century antiquarian printmaking, combining scholarly interest with aesthetic refinement.
