Imperial Chinese Processions – 3 Antique Prints, Ferrario China, Hand Colored, 1815
This refined set of three original hand-colored copperplate engravings depicts scenes of imperial ceremony, authority, and governance in early nineteenth-century China. The plates were published in 1815 as part of Giulio Ferrario’s influential series Le Costume Ancien et Moderne, produced in Italy and intended as a comprehensive visual encyclopedia of global cultures, customs, and power structures.
Arranged left to right, the scenes form a coherent visual narrative progressing from ceremonial display to formal authority and controlled movement. The first plate presents a richly appointed imperial procession with officials and attendants escorting a ceremonial chariot, emphasizing hierarchy and ritual. The second plate shows a guarded chariot in motion, underscoring the presence of armed authority and disciplined escort. The third plate depicts armed figures on horseback and on foot, reinforcing the role of military oversight within the imperial system.
Ferrario’s China plates are notable for their clarity of composition, ethnographic intent, and restrained but expressive hand coloring. Rather than theatrical exaggeration, these scenes focus on structure, rank, and symbolism, offering European viewers a carefully ordered vision of imperial governance and social control. Together, the three prints create a balanced horizontal composition well suited to display as a triptych.
As with other plates from the Milan edition of Le Costume Ancien et Moderne, each sheet bears the original embossed blind stamp associated with the publication. This dry stamp was applied at the time of issue and serves as an important indicator of authenticity. As issued, the embossing may lightly overlap the image area.
This set is offered unframed and represents an excellent example of early nineteenth-century European interpretations of Chinese imperial life. It is particularly appealing to collectors of Asian history, imperial imagery, ethnographic prints, and interior designers seeking a historically grounded yet visually cohesive wall arrangement.
Condition Report:
Overall good antique condition. Light age-related toning and occasional scattered spotting consistent with early 19th-century paper. Original hand coloring remains fresh and well preserved. Original embossed blind stamps visible on all three sheets, as issued, with minor overlap into the image area possible. No major tears, losses, or restorations observed.
Framing Tips:
For optimal presentation, frame as a horizontal triptych with generous ivory or soft off-white mats to complement the paper tone. Simple dark wood, walnut, or lightly antiqued gilt frames work well and reinforce the formal, authoritative character of the scenes. Maintaining equal spacing between the three images enhances the narrative flow and museum-style appearance.
