This charming 19th-century hand-colored lithograph depicts Paulus Potter, the celebrated Dutch painter renowned for his lifelike portrayals of animals and rural scenes. Born in 1625, Potter is best known for his masterpiece The Young Bull, and he is considered one of the finest animal painters of the Dutch Golden Age.
The scene shows Potter in his studio, seated with his palette and brushes in hand, intently working on a large canvas filled with detailed animal studies. Cows, dogs, and a seated shepherd emerge on the canvas, capturing the essence of his naturalistic style. The setting, with wooden floors, a modest work table, and shelves of painter’s tools, offers a glimpse into the quiet focus of a working artist.
