About this sheet

An original nineteenth-century Swedish lithograph titled En Herde-Scen ("A Shepherd Scene"), published in Stockholm by Albert Bonnier as part of the celebrated Album Efter Taflor by the Swedish Romantic painter Pehr Wickenberg. The composition bears the poetic subtitle Efter Jag var i Arkadien ("After I Was in Arcadia"), referencing the idealized pastoral landscapes and classical themes that captivated European artists during the Romantic period.

The scene presents a tranquil Arcadian gathering beneath a large tree. An elderly shepherd leans thoughtfully upon his staff while a young woman stands beside him, and a youthful musician plays a flute. A faithful dog listens attentively at his master's feet. Flowing water, lush vegetation, and distant hills complete the idyllic landscape, creating an atmosphere of harmony between humanity and nature.

Pehr Wickenberg (1812–1846) ranks among the most important artists of Swedish Romanticism. Although widely celebrated for his atmospheric winter landscapes, he also produced historical, literary, and pastoral subjects inspired by classical antiquity and European artistic traditions. Following his untimely death, Albert Bonnier published Album Efter Taflor to preserve and disseminate his most admired compositions through a series of high-quality lithographs.

The Arcadian theme derives from the ancient Greek region of Arcadia, which for centuries symbolized an ideal pastoral paradise. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, artists and poets throughout Europe embraced Arcadia as a metaphor for innocence, beauty, music, and a life lived in harmony with nature. Wickenberg's interpretation combines classical elegance with the emotional sensitivity characteristic of Scandinavian Romantic art.

The lithograph is executed with remarkable delicacy and tonal sophistication. The careful rendering of foliage, drapery, landscape elements, and facial expressions demonstrates the high standards of Swedish lithographic production during the mid-nineteenth century. The result is a work that is both decorative and intellectually engaging.

Today, prints from Album Efter Taflor are increasingly sought after by collectors of Scandinavian art, classical subjects, pastoral imagery, and nineteenth-century Romantic printmaking. This example is particularly appealing for its serene composition and timeless subject matter.

Framing Suggestions:

It also pairs attractively with mythological and literary subjects from the same series.
