Spanish Sheep, Ewe, Lamb & Ram, Brodtmann Lithograph, 1816
This original hand-colored lithograph depicts the Spanish Sheep, one of the most historically important breeds in European agriculture. The composition presents a ewe with her lamb in the upper section and a mature ram below, providing a complete study of the breed's appearance, anatomy, and characteristic wool. Beneath the image appears the title *Das Spanische Schaf* ("The Spanish Sheep") together with the scientific designation *Capra Ovis Hispaniae*.
The print was created by Swiss artist and natural history illustrator Karl Joseph Brodtmann (1787–1862) and published in Lindau in 1816 as part of the celebrated *Naturhistorische Bilder-Gallerie aus dem Thierreiche*. Produced during the pioneering years of lithographic printing, this work reflects the growing scientific interest in domestic animals and livestock breeds that played a vital role in agriculture and commerce.
Spanish sheep, particularly the famed Merino lineage, were among the most valuable livestock in Europe during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Their exceptionally fine wool transformed the textile industry and became a major source of wealth for Spain. Brodtmann's carefully observed illustration documents the breed's robust form, dense fleece, and characteristic horn structure of the ram.
The artist's delicate hand coloring and precise draftsmanship elevate the print beyond a purely scientific study. Condition report:
Good condition considering age. Light age toning, occasional foxing, and minor handling wear consistent with a print more than 200 years old. Original hand coloring remains attractive and well preserved. Please examine photographs carefully.
