Original Antique Print of Louis XIII on Horseback by F. Roy, circa 1860
A graceful original antique French costume print depicting King Louis XIII of France on horseback in ceremonial dress at the beginning of the seventeenth century.
This plate originates from the French series *Costumes civils et militaires des Français à travers les siècles*, published in Paris by F. Roy and conceived as a scholarly visual survey of French civil and military dress across the centuries.
The print is titled "Louis XIII à Cheval" and is based on an engraving of 1615 after a drawing by Chevignard. Louis XIII (1601–1643), King of France from 1610 until 1643, is portrayed riding an elegantly caparisoned white horse while dressed in richly ornamented court costume. The decorative saddlecloth, plumed hat, flowing sash and ceremonial riding pose beautifully reflect the splendour of the French royal court during the early Bourbon period.
The elegant equestrian composition and refined hand colouring make this one of the most decorative royal costume plates from the series. It is especially desirable for collectors of French history, royal portraiture, equestrian art, historical costume and seventeenth-century decorative prints.
This is a genuine original antique print published circa 1860. It is not a modern reproduction.
