A handsome original antique French costume print depicting King Louis XII of France making his ceremonial entry into Genoa at the beginning of the sixteenth century.
This plate originates from the French series Costumes civils et militaires des Français à travers les siècles, published in Paris by F. Roy and conceived as a scholarly visual survey of French civil and military dress across the centuries.
The print is titled "Louis XII Faisant son Entrée à Gênes" and is based on a manuscript miniature preserved in the Bibliothèque nationale, dated 1515. Louis XII (1462–1515), King of France from 1498 until his death, is shown wearing richly decorated ceremonial armour while mounted on an elaborately caparisoned horse. The sumptuous textiles, finely engraved armour and regal equestrian pose make this one of the most decorative royal military costume plates from the series.
The print beautifully captures the splendour of Renaissance court pageantry and is especially appealing to collectors of French history, Renaissance costume, equestrian art, heraldry and royal portraiture.
This is a genuine original antique print published circa 1860. It is not a modern reproduction.
