About this sheet

Lioness and Cub, Brodtmann Hand-Colored Natural History Lithograph, 1816

This striking original hand-colored lithograph depicts a lioness accompanied by her cub, rendered with the elegance and scientific precision characteristic of early nineteenth-century natural history illustration. The plate is titled Die Löwin ("The Lioness") and bears the scientific designation Felis Leo Foemina, reflecting the zoological classification used during the period.

Created by Swiss artist and natural history illustrator Karl Joseph Brodtmann (1787–1862), the print was published in Lindau in 1816 as part of the celebrated Naturhistorische Bilder-Gallerie aus dem Thierreiche. This ambitious work sought to introduce the animal kingdom to a broad audience through finely executed lithographs combining scientific observation with artistic refinement.

The composition presents the lioness in a dignified standing pose while her cub rests calmly at her feet. Brodtmann's careful attention to anatomy, fur texture, and expression creates an image that is both scientifically informative and visually appealing. The soft hand coloring enhances the warm golden tones of the animals' coats while subtle landscape elements provide a natural setting without distracting from the subjects.

Produced during the pioneering years of lithographic printing, this sheet represents an important period in the history of natural history illustration. Brodtmann was among the earliest masters of the lithographic medium, and his works are prized today for their combination of accuracy, decorative beauty, and historical significance.

The lion has long symbolized strength, courage, royalty, and protection. The inclusion of the cub adds a narrative element of maternal care and family, making this print particularly attractive as both a zoological study and a decorative artwork. Its clean composition and timeless subject matter allow it to complement both traditional and contemporary interiors.

Today, Brodtmann's natural history plates are sought after by collectors of zoology, wildlife art, scientific illustration, and early lithography. The universal appeal of the lion, often referred to as the "King of Beasts," makes this one of the most desirable subjects from the series.

Condition report:
Good condition considering age. Light age toning, occasional foxing, and minor handling wear consistent with a print over 200 years old. Original hand coloring remains attractive and well preserved. Please examine photographs carefully.

Framing tips:
This print displays beautifully in a dark walnut, ebonized, or black-gilt frame with an ivory museum mat. The warm coloration of the lioness and cub pairs particularly well with natural wood tones. An excellent choice for libraries, studies, safari-inspired interiors, and collections devoted to wildlife or natural history.
