Young King Edward VI Portrait Engraving, Tudor Royal, Holbein, c.1740
This elegant 18th-century copperplate engraving presents a refined portrait of King Edward VI of England (reigned 1547–1553), depicted in his youth with remarkable grace and composure. The print is based on a celebrated Tudor portrait by Hans Holbein the Younger, the foremost court painter of Henry VIII, and was engraved in the mid-18th century in the circle of George Vertue, whose works helped define the visual canon of England’s royal lineage.
At the center, the young monarch is shown in richly ornamented court dress, adorned with an elaborate chain of office and wearing a feathered cap. His poised expression and dignified bearing convey both the fragility and authority of a child king, emphasizing the unique historical moment of his short reign.
The portrait is set within a finely carved architectural frame, crowned at the top with a royal coronet, reinforcing his status as sovereign. Below, the composition is animated by a charming and unusual detail: two children gathered at the base of the pedestal, gazing up at the portrait. One holds a drawing or sheet, introducing a subtle allegorical element—perhaps a reflection on learning, legacy, or the passing of royal image through time.
The engraving is inscribed as being “From an Original in Kensington Palace,” linking it directly to the royal collections and enhancing its historical significance. The plate itself was engraved by Hulett after Holbein’s design, following the popular 18th-century practice of reproducing iconic royal portraits for historical publications such as The Heads of the Kings of England.
