About this sheet
Willem and Carolina, the royal children of the House of Orange-Nassau, an engraved double portrait published in the Netherlands around 1730. The imprint reads "Societ. Bibliop. Rotterod. Exeudit" (the Rotterdam booksellers' society), with the draftsman G. Schouten and the engraver P. Tanjé credited in the lower corners.
The two children are shown half-length in a shaped frame under a swag of fruit and flowers, with a large book lettered "Biblia Sacra" at the top. Willem, at the left, wears a plumed helmet and holds a shield bearing the arms of the House of Orange-Nassau. Carolina, at the right, wears a regal ermine-lined robe and holds an orb in one hand and an olive branch in the other. A classical rotunda stands in the garden behind them, and a plaque at the foot gives their names and titles in Dutch.
Willem became the first hereditary stadtholder of all the United Provinces in 1747. The engraver Pieter Tanjé (1706 to 1761) worked in Amsterdam and Rotterdam.
