Queen Elizabeth I Portrait Engraving, Antique British Royal Print 1784
A striking and highly decorative 18th-century copperplate engraving depicting Queen Elizabeth I (1533–1603), one of the most iconic monarchs in English history. This refined portrait was engraved for Harrison’s edition of Rapin’s History of England and published in London on March 25, 1784.
The composition presents Elizabeth I in an elegant oval cartouche, adorned with elaborate ornamental scrollwork and delicate neoclassical detailing. She is shown in full regal attire, wearing an elaborate lace ruff, jeweled bodice, and crown, all rendered with exceptional precision. The fine engraving technique beautifully captures the textures of fabric, jewelry, and hair, demonstrating the high level of craftsmanship typical of late 18th-century British printmaking.
Above the portrait, an engraved inscription identifies her as “Elizabeth Queen of England, France and Ireland,” reflecting the traditional royal titulature of the period.
