About this sheet

An original nineteenth century engraved portrait of Lord Clyde, the Scottish field marshal Colin Campbell, lettered "Lord Clyde" below the image and "Engraved by Holl, from a Photograph by Mayall" beneath the plate.

The sitter is shown at three quarter length, seated beside a draped table with books, his right forearm resting on the table and his hand hanging loosely. He wears civilian dress, a dark frock coat, waistcoat and loosely tied neckcloth, and his thick curling gray hair and heavy moustache frame a lined, watchful face. The background is a plain dark field built up in close horizontal lines, which throws the head and hands into relief. The source, a studio photograph by John Jabez Edwin Mayall, the leading London portrait photographer of the period, gives the likeness its directness and informality.

Colin Campbell (1792 to 1863) rose from modest origins in Glasgow to the highest rank in the British army. He commanded the Highland Brigade in the Crimea, where his troops held the line at Balaclava, and as commander in chief in India during the uprising of 1857 he relieved Lucknow and recaptured much of northern India. He was created Baron Clyde in 1858 and made a field marshal in 1862.

The publisher's line at the foot of the sheet reads "William Mackenzie, London, Edinburgh and Glasgow" (lettered with an ampersand). Mackenzie was a Glasgow based publisher of illustrated subscription works, issued in parts and often with full page engraved portraits. The engraver is lettered only as Holl, the name of a well known family of London portrait engravers.

The fine steel line, the strong tonal contrast and the wide margins make this an attractive portrait to frame alone or with other Victorian military figures, and it suits a study, a library or a collection devoted to Scottish or military history.

This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed. Any framed or interior images are shown for presentation and inspiration only, unless the listing explicitly states that the item is sold framed.
