About this sheet

This steel engraved portrait shows Lord Clyde seated at three quarter length, turned slightly to the left and looking directly at the viewer. He has a full head of curling gray hair and a heavy mustache, and wears a dark frock coat over a buttoned waistcoat with a high collar and a black stock. His right forearm rests on a draped table at the left edge of the image, where a book lies, and the background is laid in with fine diagonal lines that throw the head forward. The engraver has rendered the lined face and tousled hair with great precision, preserving the directness of the photograph on which the plate is based.

The image is lettered beneath "Engraved by Holl from a Photograph by Mayall." The sitter's name, LORD CLYDE, is set in open capitals below, and the foot of the sheet carries the imprint "William Mackenzie, Glasgow, Edinburgh & London." Mayall is the celebrated portrait photographer John Jabez Edwin Mayall, and Holl is one of the London family of engravers who specialized in portrait plates of this kind.

Colin Campbell, 1st Baron Clyde (1792 to 1863), was one of the most respected British soldiers of the nineteenth century. Born in Glasgow, he served in the Peninsular War and later commanded the Highland Brigade in the Crimea, where his 93rd Highlanders held the line at Balaclava in 1854, the stand later remembered as the thin red line. As commander in chief in India during the rebellion of 1857 he relieved Lucknow and restored British control, was raised to the peerage as Baron Clyde in 1858, and was made a field marshal shortly before his death.

William Mackenzie of Glasgow issued large illustrated works in parts throughout the 1860s and 1870s, and portrait plates such as this one were a mainstay of his biographical and historical publications. This is a fine impression of a sympathetic likeness, of interest to collectors of Scottish and military history.

This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed. Any framed or interior images are shown for presentation and inspiration only, unless the listing explicitly states that the item is sold framed.
