Dahomans – Antique Hand-Colored Ethnographic Engraving (c.1810)
Impressive early 19th-century hand-colored copperplate engraving representing figures from the historic Kingdom of Dahomey (present-day Benin, West Africa). The composition portrays a regal leader seated with spear in hand, adorned in a feathered headdress and a luxurious pink cloth trimmed in gold. A woman behind him holds a fan and wears finely detailed jewelry and patterned garments. At their feet, a figure bows in deep submission — visualizing hierarchical power structures as interpreted by European illustrators of the era.
This engraving was drawn by J. Kuyper and engraved by L. Portman, published in the Netherlands around 1810 as part of a sought-after ethnographic series documenting cultures encountered during European exploration and early anthropological study. The vivid hand-applied color — rich pinks, deep yellows, and warm earth tones — elevates the artwork’s striking presence.
