King Henry VIII Portrait Engraving, Tudor Royal Image, Vertue, c.1736
This striking 18th-century copperplate engraving presents a powerful portrait of King Henry VIII of England (reigned 1509–1547), one of the most iconic monarchs of the Tudor dynasty. Executed by the renowned English engraver George Vertue around 1736, the image is based on the celebrated portrait by Hans Holbein the Younger, then housed in the Royal Gallery at Kensington.
The composition is richly layered with symbolic and decorative elements. At the center, Henry VIII is shown in a commanding bust-length portrait, dressed in elaborately patterned royal attire and a fur-trimmed mantle, emphasizing both wealth and authority. His direct gaze and imposing presence reflect the strength and dominance associated with his reign.
Above the portrait, an elaborate trophy of religious and royal symbolism unfolds. The Ten Commandments, the Bible, and a crown are prominently displayed, accompanied by the royal motto “Fidei Defensor” (Defender of the Faith), a title granted to Henry by the Pope before his break with the Roman Catholic Church. This juxtaposition of imagery adds a compelling historical tension, reflecting the king’s central role in the English Reformation.
Flanking the composition are medallion portraits and heraldic elements, enhancing the regal framing of the central image. At the bottom, a finely engraved vignette depicts a narrative scene, possibly alluding to events from Henry’s reign or his religious reforms, adding both visual interest and historical context.
