About this sheet
Original antique engraved portrait of Heinrich II “der Jüngere” (Henry the Younger, 1489–1568), Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg and Prince of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. The Duke is shown half-length in an elaborate oval cartouche, wearing court dress, a feathered cap and chain of office. Above is a scrolling banner identifying him as “Heinrich der Jünger, von Gottes Gnaden, Herzog zu Braunschweig und Lüneburg.” His heraldic coat of arms appears prominently below the portrait, flanked by two winged figures and extensive German biographical text recording important events in his life and his death in June 1568. A finely worked and highly decorative German noble portrait combining portraiture, heraldry and historical biography.
