Duke of Wellington Portrait, Waterloo Hero, British Engraving c.1820
This refined engraved portrait depicts Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington (1769–1852), one of Britain’s most celebrated military commanders and statesmen, renowned for his decisive victory over Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. The composition presents Wellington in a dignified half-length format, wearing a sash and star of distinction, reflecting both his military authority and elevated social status.
Likely published in London in the early to mid-19th century, this engraving belongs to the tradition of portrait prints produced for biographical dictionaries and historical compilations, celebrating leading figures of the age. The inscription below—“His Grace The Duke of Wellington, &c. &c. &c.”—emphasizes his rank and numerous honors, typical of Regency and early Victorian print culture.
The portrait is based on a likeness by Sir Thomas Lawrence, the foremost portrait painter of the British Regency period, whose depictions of Wellington helped define his enduring public image.
