Antique Shakespeare Engraving, Julius Caesar, Brutus and Strato, Boydell, 1802
This early 19th-century copperplate engraving illustrates a dramatic scene from William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, specifically Act V, Scene V, showing the final moments of Marcus Brutus after the Battle of Philippi. Defeated and unwilling to be taken, Brutus prepares to fall upon his own sword with the assistance of his loyal companion Strato. The composition captures the tense instant before his death, with both figures shown in classical armor and theatrical poses that reflect the neoclassical taste of the period.
The engraving was painted by Richard Westall, R.A., one of the leading British historical and literary painters of the late Georgian period. Westall was particularly admired for his Shakespearean subjects and for his ability to combine dramatic narrative with refined figure design. The plate was engraved by Samuel Noble, whose careful linework and tonal control translate Westall’s composition into a highly detailed printed image.
This print was published on December 1, 1802 by J. and J. Boydell at the Shakespeare Gallery, Pall Mall and at No. 90 Cheapside, London. It belongs to the great Boydell Shakespeare project, one of the most ambitious illustrated publishing enterprises of the period, intended to celebrate Shakespeare through commissioned paintings and engravings by leading British artists.
