About this sheet
A page of fireplace designs from The Gentleman's Magazine and Historical Chronicle for 1781 (Volume LI), an original copper engraving titled "American Stoves on the Improved Construction", lettered "by James Sharp, Leadenhall Street".
The plate shows five numbered stoves, N.1 to N.5, drawn in simple perspective as ornamental grates under tall flues. The designs range from a narrow, delicate stove with swags and urns to a wide hearth with a fluted frame, and each has a firebox with bars, decorative moldings on the frame and a circular collar on the flue. The text of the facing page shows through from the verso.
The sheet dates from the period of the American Revolutionary War. It shows stove designs rather than any American place, so its interest lies in domestic metalwork and late eighteenth-century interior design.
