Antique Portrait of Jan Wagenaar – Dutch Historian of Amsterdam, Dated 1783
This finely engraved portrait depicts Jan Wagenaar (1709–1773), the renowned Dutch historian and author of the monumental Vaderlandsche Historie, a comprehensive history of the Netherlands. The inscription identifies him as the official city historian of Amsterdam (“Historieschryver der Stad Amsterdam”), born there on October 21, 1709. The portrait was engraved by Jacobus Houbraken and dated 1766.
Wagenaar sits in a three-quarter pose at a writing desk, surrounded by books and a quill, reinforcing his scholarly identity. His powdered wig, formal coat, and direct gaze are characteristic of 18th-century Enlightenment portraiture. The engraved poem below, written by Jan de Kruyff, praises Wagenaar’s dedication to truth, justice, and civic duty. It celebrates his intellectual rigor and patriotism—qualities that earned him widespread respect in his lifetime.
This print was published by the Amsterdam firm of Immerzeel & Tibout, and engraved *naar het leven* (from life), based on a portrait painted by Studio A. Zygers in 1766, a posthumous rendering meant to memorialize Wagenaar’s contributions to Dutch national identity and the city of Amsterdam.
As the author of over 20 volumes of Dutch history, Wagenaar’s influence extended far beyond his time. His work was central to shaping the 18th-century view of the Dutch Republic’s past.
