Hasselaer served as 'schepen' (alderman) and councilor ('raad') of the city of Amsterdam, a role of considerable civic responsibility in the flourishing commercial capital of the Dutch Republic.

Hasselaer appears in formal dress, with a wide ruff collar and somber robes typical of the period's civic officials.
