Antique portrait titled 'Iacobus Heemskerkius (..)'. Old portrait of Jakob van Heemskerk. This print originates from 'L'histoire des Pays-Bas d'Emanuel de Meteren. Ou recueil des guerres, et choses memorables advenues tant és dits pays, qu'és pays voysins, depuis l'an 1315 (..)'.
The navigator and admiral Jacob van Heemskerck (1567-1607) survivor and accomplished admiral, was born in Amsterdam. He took part in two of Willem Barentz's expeditions to the far north in search of a northeast passage to Asia. During the second expedition, their ship became trapped in the ice near Nova Zembla.
Artists and Engravers: Emanuel van Meteren or Meteeren (1535-1612) was a Flemish historian and consul for 'the Traders of the Low Countries' in London.
