Abul Hasan Qutb Shah Golconda Portrait Engraving, Dutch, c.1700
A finely engraved early 18th-century copperplate portrait depicting Abul Hasan Qutb Shah (c.1600–1699), the eighth and final ruler of the Qutb Shahi dynasty of Golconda in southern India. Known historically as Tana Shah, he presided over a culturally vibrant court and is often remembered for his patronage of the arts and his relatively tolerant governance during a complex period in Deccan history.
The composition presents the Sultan in an elegant oval frame, identified in the surrounding inscription as “Sultaan Aboe Il Hassan Kotbsiah Koning van Golconda.” He is shown in richly patterned court attire, with refined textile details and a composed, introspective expression. The engraving is executed with delicate linework, capturing both the decorative qualities of his garments and the individuality of the sitter.
Above the lower inscription appears the Latin motto “Nemo felix ante obitum” (“No man is happy before death”), followed by a Dutch poetic commentary. Attributed to D. Havart, the poem offers a moralizing interpretation of the Sultan’s life and rule, reflecting the European tendency to frame foreign rulers within ethical or didactic narratives. The text criticizes his perceived reliance on others and the eventual loss of his kingdom, offering a striking contrast to modern historical reassessments of his reign.
This engraving likely originates from a Dutch publication documenting rulers of Asia, part of a broader early modern effort to catalogue global figures for European audiences. The reference “Tweede Deel, Fol: 214” in the upper margin indicates its inclusion in a multi-volume work.
Visually, the print is both balanced and decorative, with its strong oval composition, refined typography, and harmonious linework. It pairs particularly well with similar portraits of Asian rulers from the same period, making it an excellent candidate for a curated wall arrangement.
