Porta del Popolo, Rome – Grand City Gate with Figures, 1867
This lithograph shows the monumental Porta del Popolo, Rome’s historic northern entrance, animated by travelers, carts, and pedestrians. Philippe Benoist frames the gate as both architectural landmark and threshold between city and countryside, capturing the rhythm of daily movement.
Issued between 1867 and 1869 for “Rome dans sa Grandeur,” the plate belongs to the section devoted to modern Rome. The Porta del Popolo had long welcomed pilgrims and Grand Tour travelers, and Benoist’s depiction reflects its symbolic role as Rome’s ceremonial gateway.
