Created by Félix Benoist after Bayot and published in Paris in 1869, the print forms part of the monumental series Rome dans sa Grandeur, an ambitious visual survey that sought to portray Rome as a unified and continuous historical landscape.
The composition opens onto the broad expanse of Piazza del Popolo, animated by figures strolling, conversing, and arriving by carriage, conveying the square’s role as a social and ceremonial gateway to the city. The twin churches of Santa Maria dei Miracoli and Santa Maria in Montesanto anchor the foreground, while the Via del Corso extends into the distance, guiding the viewer’s eye toward the dense urban fabric and softly receding Roman skyline.
