Ottoman Sultan Portrait Engraving, Constantinople View, c.1738
A finely detailed early 18th-century copperplate engraving depicting an Ottoman Sultan, identified in the inscription as the “Laatste Regeerende Groote Heer” (the last reigning Great Lord). This evocative full-length portrait presents the ruler in ceremonial Ottoman dress, set against a distant cityscape of domes and minarets, representing Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul).
The composition is both elegant and informative, combining portraiture with topographical context. The Sultan stands in a composed yet animated pose, one hand extended in gesture, the other resting at his side. He wears a richly patterned caftan and an imposing feathered headdress, both rendered with remarkable attention to texture and detail. The fine line engraving captures the luxurious fabrics and subtle folds of the garment, while the background provides a sense of place and imperial grandeur.
The Dutch inscription beneath the image states that the likeness was drawn by someone who had seen the ruler multiple times, suggesting an attempt at authenticity rather than purely imaginative representation. Such prints were often included in comprehensive geographical or ethnographic works of the period, including editions of Thomas Salmon’s Lo stato presente di tutti i paesi e popoli del mondo, which aimed to document the peoples, rulers, and customs of the known world.
