About this sheet

An original antique engraving of Eton College seen across the water meadows, lettered "Eton College, Bucks.", drawn by I. Powell, engraved by James Storer and published by J. Robins and Co. at the Albion Press, London, in 1818.

The college buildings stretch across the middle distance: the tall Gothic chapel with its corner turrets and great east window at left, and the long battlemented ranges with their towers to the right, all set among trees. In the foreground a stream runs beneath a wooden footbridge with diagonal bracing, a man poles a punt along the water, and a figure crosses the bridge. Large trees frame the left side, and a sky of towering clouds takes up half of the picture. Storer, who specialized in small, finely detailed architectural plates, gives the scene great clarity.

The lettering reads "Plate 7." above the upper right corner, "Drawn by I. Powell, Engraved by Jas. Storer." beneath the image, the title "Eton College, Bucks." and the imprint "Published by J. Robins & Co. Albion Press, London, 1818."

Eton College was founded by King Henry VI in 1440, and its chapel, begun in the 1440s, is one of the finest Perpendicular Gothic buildings in England. The town of Eton lay in Buckinghamshire until 1974, when it was transferred to Berkshire, so the lettering records the county as it was. James Storer (1771 to 1853) engraved many plates of English cathedrals, colleges and country houses, often published by Robins and others in the 1810s and 1820s.

A fine Regency view for an Old Etonian, a collector of Thames valley and Berkshire views, or a library.

Condition: Good condition for its age. Toning, a few spots in the upper left margin, faint offset in the lower left margin and light soiling to the edges. Please review the images for further condition details.
