About this sheet

This antique engraving of Eton College in Buckinghamshire, seen across a stream with a footbridge and a punt, is an original print drawn by I. Powell and engraved by James Storer, published in London by J. Robins and Company at the Albion Press in 1818. The plate is lettered "Eton College, Bucks." and numbered Plate 7.

The view shows the college buildings and the tall Perpendicular chapel of Eton rising beyond a quiet stream in the Thames meadows, with a small footbridge and a moored punt in the foreground. Founded by Henry the Sixth in 1440, Eton was already the most famous school in England, and the chapel, with its great windows and pinnacles, was a favourite subject for topographical artists working in the Thames Valley near Windsor.

James Sargant Storer was a leading engraver of small topographical plates in the early nineteenth century, known for his crisp and delicate line and his long association with antiquarian publications. J. Robins and Company of the Albion Press issued a range of illustrated books and topographical series in these years, and the plate number suggests this Eton College engraving was one of a numbered set of views, though the particular publication has not been confirmed.

The print is an uncoloured line engraving with fine detail in the architecture and the reflections in the water. It would make a thoughtful gift for an Old Etonian and would suit a collection of Buckinghamshire or Thames Valley views, hung in a study, library or college room.

The sheet is in good condition for its age, with toning, a few marginal spots, faint offset in the lower margin and light edge soiling; the image is clean.

This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed. Any framed or interior images are shown for presentation and inspiration only, unless the listing explicitly states that the item is sold framed.
