Constantinople Harbor Vue d’Optique by Jacques Chéreau, c.1760
This atmospheric hand-colored vue d’optique depicts the bustling harbor of Constantinople, modern-day Istanbul, viewed from the northern side of the city. Published in 18th-century Paris by the noted French engraver and print publisher Jacques Chéreau, the engraving captures the fascination that European audiences held for the Ottoman Empire and the exotic maritime world of the eastern Mediterranean.
The composition is rich with movement and theatrical perspective. Ottoman and European sailing vessels animate the harbor waters, while dramatic fortifications, towers, and architectural ruins frame the foreground. Elegant figures gather beside the quay as merchants, sailors, and travelers populate the scene, creating a vivid impression of Constantinople as one of the great crossroads between Europe and Asia.
This print belongs to the celebrated tradition of vues d’optique, or optical views, which were designed to be viewed through a zograscope or optical viewing device. These prints used exaggerated perspective and receding lines to create an illusion of depth and immersion. An especially desirable feature is the reversed title printed along the upper edge, intended to appear correctly when reflected through the viewing apparatus — a hallmark of authentic 18th-century optical engravings.
Jacques Chéreau was among the most important French publishers of optical views during the mid-18th century. His works are prized today for their decorative appeal, historical interest, and imaginative depictions of world cities and ports. Constantinople was one of the most sought-after subjects of the genre due to its strategic importance, cosmopolitan culture, and romanticized image in Europe.
