About this sheet

Antique Dutch architectural print of two small civic designs by E. Molemans, a steamboat landing stage and an auxiliary police station, a lithograph printed in sepia tones from the third part of J. H. Leliman's album, 1865 to 1866.

Molemans is described on the header as 'Bouwkundige', and the sheet carries two separate designs. The upper, titled 'Schets-ontwerp voor een aanlegplaats van een stoomboot' (sketch design for a steamboat landing stage), shows a canalside ticket office and waiting shelter with a canopied gangway down to a gated pier; nameboards over two round-arched doorways read 'Amersfoort' and 'Amsterdam', evidently the destinations served by the steamboat line, with a domed public building in the townscape behind and dockworkers rolling a barrel among passers-by. Its plan gives a goods office, a waiting room, a clerk's desk and the harbourmaster's office.

The lower design, titled 'Schets-ontwerp voor een hulp-bureau van politie' (sketch design for an auxiliary police station), shows a single-storey building with a pedimented central entrance bay carrying a clock and a coat of arms, flanked by plain wings with round-arched windows, two uniformed policemen and a civilian standing before it. Its plan gives the duty sergeant's office, two holding cells, a private room, fuel and equipment stores and a room for the constables, with the canal and street along the edges.

Both designs are drawn in sepia-toned line with soft shading for the trees and figures, each with its own scale, and the pairing of modest municipal buildings on one sheet is typical of the album. Jan Hendrik Leliman (1828 to 1910), an Amsterdam architect and a founder of the architects' society Architectura et Amicitia, edited the album, gathering in it his own designs and those of fellow Dutch architects. His credit runs lower left and the imprint of the lithographer S. Lankhout of The Hague lower right. This antique architectural lithograph is full of everyday town life, and it will appeal to anyone connected with Amersfoort, Amsterdam or Dutch inland shipping and policing.

The sheet is in good condition for its age, with light toning, a few small spots, a faint horizontal crease across the lower part and minor wear to the sheet edges. Please see the images for further detail.
