This refined early nineteenth-century lithograph depicts the monumental remains of the Tour Magne, one of the most important surviving Roman structures in the historic city of Nîmes in southern France. The composition captures the imposing ruin rising above the surrounding landscape, reflecting the Romantic-era fascination with classical antiquity and picturesque ruins that flourished in Europe during the early 1800s.
The print is attributed to the French lithographer Charles Étienne Pierre Motte (1785–1836), one of the pioneers of lithography in Paris. Motte was among the first artists and printers to master the relatively new lithographic technique, which had been introduced to France only a few decades earlier. His workshop produced numerous architectural views, landscapes, and historical subjects, admired for their delicate tonal gradations and precise draftsmanship.
The subject of the print is the Tour Magne, a massive Roman tower that formed part of the ancient defensive walls of Nemausus, the Roman predecessor of modern Nîmes. Built during the reign of Augustus in the late first century BCE, the tower was one of the most prominent structures of the Roman city and symbolized its strength and prosperity. Even in ruin, it remains the tallest and most impressive surviving element of the ancient fortifications.
The artist renders the tower with careful attention to its weathered stonework and monumental structure.
