French Renaissance Relief Sculptures – Château d’Écouen Engravings, 1803
This refined set of three early nineteenth-century engravings illustrates sculptural reliefs from the chapel of the historic Château d’Écouen. The prints originate from the rare architectural publication Paris et ses Monuments, mesurés, dessinés et gravés, produced by the French architect and engraver Louis-Pierre Baltard and published in Paris in 1803 during the Napoleonic era. Baltard’s monumental work was dedicated to Napoleon Bonaparte and aimed to document important monuments around Paris with precise measured drawings and carefully executed engravings.
The engravings record sculptural elements from the elaborate master altar of the château chapel. Each plate focuses on a different group of figures rendered as classical relief sculpture. The first engraving presents three standing female allegorical figures arranged in narrow niches, draped in classical garments and depicted with graceful Renaissance proportions. Their poses and flowing garments reflect the sculptural traditions of the sixteenth century while also echoing the neoclassical taste of Baltard’s time.
The second engraving depicts two reclining allegorical figures seated among clouds, holding tablets and books. Their gestures suggest learning, wisdom, and contemplation—themes frequently associated with Renaissance decorative programs in chapels and ceremonial interiors.
The third plate shows two additional allegorical figures from the lateral sides of the altar composition. One figure is shown writing upon a tablet while accompanied by another classical figure emerging from clouds. The sculptural forms are rendered with remarkable clarity through Baltard’s delicate copperplate linework.
Together these engravings form a beautifully balanced sculptural study of Renaissance religious decoration. Baltard’s engravings combine architectural precision with artistic refinement. Fine engraved lines and subtle cross-hatching create depth and volume while preserving the clarity of the sculptural forms.
The Château d’Écouen itself is one of the most important Renaissance monuments in France. Built in the sixteenth century for the powerful Montmorency family, the château later became a national monument and today houses the Musée National de la Renaissance. Baltard’s engravings preserve an early nineteenth-century scholarly record of its architectural and sculptural decoration.

Condition report:
Very good condition for early nineteenth-century engravings. Printed on laid paper with generous margins. Light age toning and occasional spotting typical for prints of this age. The engraved impressions remain sharp and well preserved.
Framing tips:
These engravings display beautifully as a coordinated wall set. Dark walnut or black frames with generous ivory mats highlight the delicate engraving lines and create a refined museum-style presentation. A symmetrical arrangement of the three plates works particularly well in classical or modern interiors.
