French Neoclassical Architecture Engravings Set, Château d’Écouen, 1803
This elegant set of three early 19th-century architectural engravings originates from the rare French publication Paris et ses Monuments, mesurés, dessinés et gravés, created by architect and engraver Louis-Pierre Baltard and published in Paris in 1803 during the Napoleonic era. Baltard’s monumental work was dedicated to Napoleon Bonaparte and represents one of the earliest systematic visual surveys of Parisian monuments and important historic architecture in the region.
The engravings document architectural elements of the historic Château d’Écouen, one of the most important Renaissance châteaux in France. Built in the sixteenth century for the powerful Montmorency family, the château became a celebrated architectural landmark and today houses the Musée National de la Renaissance. Baltard’s publication sought to record such monuments with scientific precision through measured drawings and carefully executed copperplate engravings.
The present group illustrates three different architectural studies connected to the château. One plate depicts a refined classical façade featuring Corinthian columns, sculptural niches, and richly ornamented entablatures typical of French Renaissance architecture interpreted through a neoclassical lens. Another engraving presents an evocative study of sculptural fragments and decorative architectural elements, arranged in a picturesque composition that highlights carved capitals, ornamental friezes, and architectural stonework. The third plate shows a highly detailed elevation of the master altar from the château chapel, revealing the elaborate sculptural program and architectural framing that characterized ceremonial interiors of the period.
Baltard’s engravings are notable for their crisp architectural linework and balanced compositions. Fine copperplate engraving allows intricate decorative details to be rendered with remarkable clarity, while subtle cross-hatching creates depth and tonal richness. Together the three plates form a visually balanced architectural ensemble combining structural design, decorative ornament, and historical documentation.

Condition report:
Very good condition for early nineteenth-century engravings. Printed on laid paper with wide margins. Light age toning and occasional small spotting consistent with age. The engraved impressions remain sharp and well preserved.

Dark walnut or black frames with generous ivory mats create a classic museum-style presentation that highlights the crisp architectural linework. For contemporary interiors, thin black gallery frames with wide mats offer a refined and modern look.
