Egyptian City Architecture with Tower, Denon Engraving, 1802
This vertically composed architectural view illustrates an Egyptian urban structure dominated by a tower, engraved after drawings by Denon and published in Paris in 1802. The plate forms part of Voyage dans la Basse et la Haute Égypte, one of the most influential early works to document Egypt through direct observation.
The composition emphasises mass, proportion, and vertical rhythm, with human figures reduced to scale markers against the built environment. Denon’s restrained linework avoids theatricality, instead presenting architecture as a historical and functional presence within the landscape.
