About this sheet
This original antique lithograph, hand colored, comes from the Galleria Universale di Tutti i Popoli del Mondo (Venice, Giuseppe Antonelli, 1842). The upper image shows three insignia: a dark gray cross edged in black and gold, hung from a black ribbon, a plain red Latin cross, and a gold sword with a blue letter S twisted around the blade. The lower image shows at left a knight in a long white robe with a gold collar, wearing a crimson hood whose long tail falls below his knees; at right a gold collar of linked fleurs de lis, crowned medallions and a central trophy of arms, and below it an eight pointed gold cross with a white dove at the center, set with fleurs de lis and hung from a black ribbon.
The top margin is lettered "Tom. IV.", "FRANCIA" and "Tav. 35". The upper captions read "Ordine Teutonico" (Teutonic Order), "Ordine dei Templari" (Order of the Templars) and "Ordine di Cipro" (Order of Cyprus), with "Ordini" (Orders) in the band between the images. The lower caption reads "Cav. del Toson d'oro. Collana e Croce dell' Ordine del S. Spirito" (Knight of the Golden Fleece. Collar and cross of the Order of the Holy Spirit).
The Teutonic Order and the Knights Templar were military religious orders of the crusades. The Order of the Golden Fleece was founded by Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in 1430. The Order of the Holy Spirit, whose cross carries a dove, was founded by Henry III of France in 1578 and was the senior order of the French monarchy.
A good sheet for a collection on heraldry and chivalry, with gold highlights that read well under glass.
Condition: Light wear to the corners; minor nicks to the right edge. Light age toning; light handling soiling along the edges and a few small spots in the margins. A crease in the lower right of the sheet. Printed image clean.
