Art Nouveau Glass & Historic Glassmaking, Pair of Meyers Chromolithographs
This attractive pair of original chromolithographs was published by Meyers Konversations-Lexikon in Leipzig in 1898 and illustrates the remarkable history and artistic development of glassmaking from antiquity through the Art Nouveau period.
The first plate, titled "Glaskunstindustrie I," presents an international survey of historic glass objects. Featured examples include Phoenician-Assyrian glass, Roman vessels, Venetian millefiori glass, Venetian network glass, Egyptian mosque lamps, Persian bowls, German enamelled glass, Chinese vases, and other notable forms. Together they demonstrate the technical sophistication and artistic diversity achieved by glassmakers across many centuries and cultures.
The second plate, "Glaskunstindustrie III," focuses on contemporary decorative glass at the height of the Art Nouveau movement. Illustrated are works by some of the most influential designers and manufacturers of the late nineteenth century, including Louis Comfort Tiffany of New York, Émile Gallé of Nancy, Daum of Nancy, Karl Köpping of Berlin, Peter Behrens of Darmstadt, and Val Saint Lambert of Belgium. The designs showcase flowing organic forms, iridescent surfaces, floral motifs, and innovative artistic techniques that helped define the decorative arts of the fin de siècle.
Beyond their educational value, these plates are visually striking works of art.
