Antique Ottoman Glazed Brick Ornament Print, Bursa & İnegöl, Alexandre Raymond, 1924
Original architectural lithograph from Alexandre M. Raymond's landmark publication *L'Art Islamique en Orient – IIe Partie*, illustrating decorative glazed brickwork and geometric wall ornaments from Bursa and its surrounding region, dating from 1421 to 1451.
Issued as Plate 46, this exceptional composition brings together several architectural motifs from private residences, mosques, madrasas, and caravanserais of early Ottoman Anatolia. The sheet documents ornamental brick patterns from Bursa, a doorway detail from the Pirindji Han (1421), a blocked window from the Kara-Cheïk Mosque (1440), decorative motifs from the Medrese of İnegöl (1450), and geometric wall ornament from a private house in Yenişehir (1450).
The designs reveal the remarkable transition from Seljuk decorative traditions to a distinctly Ottoman visual language. Interlocking geometric forms, stylized brick patterns, and elegant arch compositions demonstrate the sophisticated use of coloured glazed masonry that characterized fifteenth-century Bursa, the first great capital of the Ottoman Empire.
The harmonious palette of pale turquoise, terracotta, soft green, and warm cream lends the composition an unexpectedly modern appearance. The ornamental vocabulary documented here would influence Ottoman decorative arts for centuries, appearing in architecture, textiles, woodwork, and ceramics throughout the empire.
Alexandre M. Raymond meticulously recorded these details during his travels across Turkey in the early twentieth century. Condition: Good original condition with age-related toning, scattered foxing, light marginal wear, and minor handling marks consistent with age. The printed image remains clear and attractive with well-preserved colours.
