Antique engraving of Hedsor on the Thames, Lord Boston’s estate, Tombleson, c.1832–1834

The artist responsible for the drawing is William Tombleson (1795–1846), one of the foremost English topographical draughtsmen of his time. His celebrated series Views of the Thames and Medway (published c.1832–1834) was a triumph of both artistry and technical accomplishment. Each plate in the series was engraved by a skilled printmaker—in this case W. Taylor—who translated Tombleson’s precise yet romantic drawings into engraved form. The result is a balance between documentary accuracy and artistic imagination. The plates were published in London by Tombleson & Co. at 11 Paternoster Row, and often issued in continental editions as well.
