Set of 2 Antique Beetle Prints – Scarab, Ground, and Longhorn Beetles, Sumatra c.1887

This pair of antique lithographs depicts various beetle species from the Dutch natural history exploration of Midden-Sumatra (Central Sumatra) in the late 19th century. The plates are titled 'Midden-Sumatra IV.6 Coleopt. Pl. II' and 'Coleopt. Pl. III', drawn by H.W. de G. et A.J.W. and lithographed with printing by P.W\.M. Trap.

The first plate illustrates species from the families Cicindelidae (tiger beetles), Carabidae (ground beetles), and Scarabaeidae (scarab beetles). Each beetle is rendered in full color with accompanying detailed anatomical studies of mandibles, antennae, and elytra for taxonomic identification.

The second plate focuses on Cerambycidae (longhorn beetles), showing five species including their distinctive elongated antennae, body segments, and leg morphology, along with structural detail sketches. The illustrations combine scientific accuracy with artistic finesse, produced under the supervision of Dutch entomologists to document Sumatra’s rich beetle biodiversity.

Condition report:
Both prints are in very good condition with bright original coloring and strong impressions. Minor age toning and a few faint margin spots typical of age are present, not affecting the images. The paper remains stable with no tears or repairs.
