This refined 19th-century engraving titled *City of Milwaukee* presents a broad panoramic view of the rapidly growing Midwestern city, seen from an elevated, wooded vantage point. Dense foliage fills the foreground, opening toward an expansive cityscape beyond, where church towers, civic buildings, and clustered rooftops rise above the tree line. In the far distance, the flat horizon and suggestion of Lake Michigan emphasize Milwaukee’s strategic position as a major inland port and commercial center.
The print was drawn by A. C. Warren and engraved by R. Hinshelwood, and published in New York by D. Appleton & Co. The lower margin bears the U.S. copyright line “Entered according to Act of Congress A.D. 1872,” making 1872 the correct documented year of registration, with publication following shortly thereafter. Appleton’s series of American city views was aimed at a national audience eager to visualize the country’s expanding urban landscape during a period of rapid industrial and demographic growth.

Condition report
Good antique condition. Light overall age toning and scattered foxing, primarily in the margins. The engraved image remains clear and well-defined. A visible plate mark is present. No major tears or losses observed.

A dark walnut or black frame with a wide off-white mat will complement the engraving’s tonal range and panoramic format. A double mat with a subtle darker inner line adds depth and a refined, museum-style presentation.
