About this sheet
A view of Lima, the capital of Peru, an original steel engraving of about 1870 titled "Lima" in small type beneath the image. The source work is not identified, and the sheet is printed on a toned paper with wide margins.
The view looks across a river toward the city, where a low arched stone bridge crosses the water in the middle distance and the skyline is a crowded mass of domes, belfries and flat-roofed houses. A heavy wall and tower rise at the right, and a tall tree frames the scene from the right edge. In the foreground a stone parapet carries a group of figures in cloaks and broad hats, two of them seated and looking out over the water, the others standing at the left with their backs to the viewer.
Lima was the seat of Spanish power in South America from its founding in 1535, and the domes and towers in this view indicate the churches and convents that gave it its reputation for devotion among nineteenth century travelers.
