Engraving titled Grande Place de Santiago de Chili, published in 1867. The scene shows the central square (Plaza de Armas) of Santiago, Chile’s capital, framed by colonnaded arcades and civic buildings. In the foreground, daily activity unfolds with horse-drawn carts, market traders, and pedestrians animating the plaza, reflecting the commercial and social vibrancy of the city in the mid-19th century.
The backdrop features the Cerro Santa Lucía, the rocky hill that dominates the city center, and beyond it the Andean foothills that characterize Santiago’s dramatic geography. This engraving, executed by Aubert and printed by Ch. Chardon in Paris, was part of a series of views of South American cities intended for a European audience eager to discover the landscapes, architecture, and life of the New World.
